Wisdom of the Shoguns

In recent years, I have watched interest in Japanese culture grow around the world. It made me wonder what people were really looking for. Beyond the familiar ideas that travel easily across cultures, there seemed to be a deeper curiosity about the values, aesthetics, and ways of thinking that have shaped Japan.

As a Japanese writer and calligrapher, I wanted to explore these ideas from within the culture, while asking what they might mean in contemporary life.

​

That became the starting point for Wisdom of the Shoguns.

​

The book brings together sayings and teachings associated with figures such as Tokugawa Ieyasu, Miyamoto Musashi, and Oda Nobunaga. Rather than treating them simply as historical quotations, I explore what they can tell us about patience, discipline, judgment, leadership, failure, and how we respond to uncertainty.

In a sense, the book is an act of translation: not only between Japanese and English, but between past and present.

​

Calligraphy is part of that translation. Each quotation is accompanied by my original calligraphy, allowing the words to be encountered visually before their historical context and contemporary interpretation unfold.

History and Context: The people and circumstances behind the words, revealing very different personalities and ways of thinking within the world we now broadly associate with the samurai.

 

Original Calligraphy: Calligraphy created specifically for each quotation, bringing another dimension to the words beyond translation alone.

This is not a book about imitating the samurai or idealizing the past. It is about looking back with enough distance to ask a more useful question: what, if anything, is still worth carrying forward?
